	In response to such promises, Arab guerilla forces under Lawrence's leadership made a major contribution to the Allied victory in Middle East. But at the peace conference at war's end, they were shocked to learn that Britain and France carved out what became Iraq and Syria for themselves. Even more upsetting to the Arabs was Britain's decision to subdivide Palestine in order to provide land for a ~~Jewish~~ state (which later became the present nation of Israel). He also lobbied the government officials, testified before committees and wrote letters to the editor to protest Britain's duplicity toward its former Arab allies.
