The Church of England is tbe official Established State Church in England, whose titular Head is tbe monarch, followed by tbe Archbishop of Canterbury. The Church is often referred to as Anglican.

Anglican Communion

The Church of Wales is also Anglican as is tbe Church of Ireland, although neither is today tbe Established Church in those places.

Disestablishment of tbe Church of Wales took place in 1920 under tbe Welsh Church Act 1914. However, as a province of tbe Anglican Communion, tbe Church in Wales recognises tbe Archbishop of Canterbury as a focus of unity but without any formal authority. A cleric of tbe Church in Wales can still be appointed to posts in tbe Church of England.

The Church of Ireland was officially disestablished on 1 January 1871. Despite tbe strapline of Disestablishment positively declaring that "we were now free to shape our future…" this was by no means seen by all at tbe time as a positive move.
