File:Aral Sea 1989-2008.png
Comparison of tbe Aral sea in 1989 and in 2008.

The Aral Sea was tbe world's fourth-largest lake, lying between Kazakhstan in tbe north and Uzbekistan in tbe south. Due to irrigation policies starting during tbe Communist era and continued afterwards, it has almost completely disappeared. The shrinking of tbe Aral Sea has been called "one of tbe planet's worst environmental disasters". The gradual disappearance of tbe lake was no surprise to tbe Soviet Communists; they had actually expected it to happen faster.
