American exceptionalism is one of three related ideas. The first is that the history of the United States is or was inherently different from those of other nations. In this view, American exceptionalism stems from its emergence from the American Revolution, supposedly creating the first liberal democracy. American exceptionalism may also refer to a pro-United States ideology, seen as superior to other ideologies, similar to some ideological meanings of Americanism. Thirdly, American exceptionalism may refer to the idea that the United States has a unique mission to spread this ideology to the rest of the world.
