'''Walter Simeon Steele''' (born [[Louisville, Kentucky]] June 2, 1890) 
was the owner of the National Republic Publishing Co, and the managing editor of the ''[[National Republic]]'' magazine. 

Steele began his interest in exposing radical organizations when he was a newspaperman working against the [[IWW]]. In 1924 he became associated with the ''National Republic'' and focused on [[Communist]] subversion in America. Over the years Steele assembled over forty thousand files on communist and fascist activists in the United States which he shared with governmental agencies including the [[FBI]] and the [[Civil Service Commission]].<ref>''Not without honor: the history of American anticommunism'', By Richard Gid Powers, page 80</ref>

==Background==
Steele worked for several newspapers in [[Indiana]] including Marion, and once ran for mayor of Muncie. He married Valeria Knobb.

He was the son of  Samuel Pottinger Steel and  Mary Alice Johnston.
