Those who supported the Constitution and a stronger national republic were known as Federalists. Those who opposed the ratification of the Constitution in favor of small localized government were known as Anti-Federalists. By and large, the Federalists wanted to duplicate Ancient Rome. The Federalists wanted a strong central government, with a strong executive branch. they did not want a Bill of Rights, in their minds the Constitution was efficient enough without one. Most of the Federalists were in fact fascists, but the term had not yet been invented.
