The Chernobyl disaster was an accident in 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in the Soviet Union, the worst disaster in the history of nuclear power generation.
One effect was to decrease support for and use of nuclear power, despite fossil fuels causing far more deaths, global warming fears, and renewable energy sources in practice having many problems, in particular in northern regions.
