Walter Simeon Steele (born Louisville, Kentucky June 2, 1890) was the owner of the National Republic Publishing Co, and the managing editor of the National Republic magazine.
Steele began his interest in exposing radical organizations when he was a newspaperman working against the IWW. In 1924 he became associated with the National Republic and focused on Communist subversion in America. Over the years Steele assembled over forty thousand files on communist and fascist activists in the United States which he shared with governmental agencies including the FBI and the Civil Service Commission.[1]
Background
Steele worked for several newspapers in Indiana including Marion, and once ran for mayor of Muncie. He married Valeria Knobb.
He was the son of Samuel Pottinger Steel and Mary Alice Johnston.
