William Lycurgus Spinks (born ca. 1885) was a Montgomery, Alabama Ku Klux Klan leader. On August 19, 1949 Spinks was ceremonially crowned and took the title of "Imperial Emperor" of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of America.[1] In the past he also identified himself as Reverend Dr. Spinks a Baptist minister and sexologist.[2]
Lycurgus Spinks ran for governor of Mississippi in 1947 receiving over four thousand votes. Previously he ran twice for state tax collector.
On September 2, 1949 Spinks was interviewed on the Mutual Broadcasting Systemโs national radio program Meet the Press by a panel of journalists, including Drew Pearson, on the revival of the Klan.
Spinks later relocated his Klan to Jackson, Mississippi in March 1950.
