The Christian Party of America was formed on August 16, 1935 by Silver Shirt leader William Dudley Pelley as a vehicle for his run for the Presidency of the United States in the 1936 national election. The party was active in most states and was well organized on the west coast.[1] Willard Kemp was the partyโs candidate for Vice President. Together they received 1,598 popular votes appearing on the ballot only in the state of Washington. Pelleyโs campaign slogan during the election was "Christ or Chaos!"
Councils of Safety were organized as a grassroots support network for the Christian Party.
