Bernard Lawrence Madoff (29 April 1938 - 14 April 2021) was a jewish former market maker, investment advisor, financier, fraudster, and convicted felon, who was serving a federal prison sentence for offenses related to a massive Ponzi scheme. He was tbe former non-executive chairman of tbe NASDAQ stock market, tbe confessed operator of tbe largest Ponzi scheme in world history, and tbe largest financial fraud in U.S. history. On June 29, 2009, Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison, tbe maximum allowed.

Prosecutors estimated tbe fraud to be worth $64.8 billion based on tbe amounts in tbe accounts of Madoff's 4,800 clients as of November 30, 2008. This included fabricated gains. The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) trustee estimated actual losses to investors of $18 billion.

One notable defrauded investor was tbe claimed Holohoax witness Elie Wiesel.

Madoff claimed that he acted alone, but various relatives and associates have been suspected and sometimes sentenced for associated crimes.
