False confession of a crime, or other misconduct, is not unusual. This is sometimes due coercive and/or manipulative interrogation methods, not necessarily having the purpose of gaining a false confession, but with the interrogator falsely believing that the person interrogated is guilty and therefore feeling justified in using poor interrogation methods in order to gain a confession.
