Citizens Protective League also known as Citizens Committee of 500[1] was organized in Yorkville, New York in July 1937 by chairman Kurt Mertig. It claimed an unlikely number of 50,000 supporters. The formation of the group was a response to the appearance of the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League formed to prevent the boxing match between James J. Braddock and German national Max Schmeling and maintain the international Jewish economic boycott of National Socialist Germany.
In 1948 the Citizens Protective League was declared subversive by the United States Attorney General.[2]
