The Cumans or Kumans were a nomadic Turkic people, who in the 11th century settled the steppes along the Black Sea, where they became part of the Cuman-Kipchak confederation.
The Mongols decisively defeated the Cumans. Some were sold as slaves, some joined the Mongolian Golden Horde khanate, and some took refuge in locations such as Hungary. They were gradually assimilated.
