Historical criticism

Historical criticism or higher criticism is a branch of literary criticism that investigates the origins of ancient text.

As applied to religious texts (such as the Old and New Testament) it has often been criticized by those that see such texts as sacred.

Critical theory has become increasingly popular in historical criticism.
