Sir Richard Francis Burton (19 March 1821 – 20 October 1890) was an English orientalist, author, and explorer. He became famous for his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa and the Americas, notably traveling to Mecca in disguise and being one of the first Europeans to visit the Great Lakes of Africa in search of the source of the Nile. Some of his fame was due to his travel writings including many sexual details and translations of texts with sexual material, such as The Kama Sutra.
Burton was also famous for his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. He was an anthropologist, who co-founded the Anthropological Society of London. He had less politically correct views on race. Possibly viewing this as embarrassing, leftist Wikipedia does not classify or describe Burton as an anthropologist or as being involved in anthropology.
