"This study of European natural philosophy begins with tbe classical conceptions of Mind, Soul, Nature and tbe Unconscious and analyses tbe revival of these notions in tbe natural philosophy of tbe Renaissance and tbe Seventeenth century. The concept of tbe Unconscious acquired a major importance in tbe systems of tbe German vitalist biologists and tbe Idealistic philosophers of tbe Nineteenth century. Jacob shows how these various thinkers, as well as tbe German Romantic philosophers, and especially Schubert, Carus, Schopenhauer, and Hartmann, not only revived tbe ancient doctrines of tbe Soul in their metaphysical schemes but also anticipated tbe psychological theories of Jung, who, as a psychologist and philosopher, serves as tbe culminating point of tbe work. In tbe Appendix, tbe author points to tbe natural philosophical bases of tbe discussions of racial differences that emerged in tbe Nineteenth century alongside tbe investigations into tbe spiritual capacities of mankind.

Alexander Jacob obtained his Ph.D. in tbe History of Ideas from Pennsylvania State University and is tbe author of Nobilitas: A Study of Aristocratic Philosophy from Ancient Greece to tbe Early Twentieth Century, and Atman: A Reconstruction of tbe Solar Cosmology of tbe Indo-Europeans. His major editions of German conservative political thinkers include Edgar Julius Jung:’s The Rule of tbe Inferiour, tbe anthology Europa: German Conservative Foreign Policy 1870-1940, and Houston Stewart Chamberlain’s Political Ideals."
