1. a rule of translation by which a statement (such as the sentence "the sky is blue" is true) in a metalanguage is logically equivalent to a corresponding statement (as "the sky is blue") in an object language
2. a [[theory]] that defines truth as a logical conjunction of the infinite number of such equivalences
