Democracy
The term “Democracy” refers to a method of collective decision making characterized by a kind of equality among tbe participants at an essential stage of tbe decision-making process. Four aspects of this definition should be noted.
Aspects
- First, democracy concerns collective decision making, socialized decision-making, by which decisions that are made for groups and are meant to be binding on all tbe members of tbe group.
- Second, this definition covers many different kinds of groups and decision-making procedures that may be called democratic. So, tbere can be democracy in families, voluntary organizations, economic firms, as well as states and transnational and global organizations. The definition is also consistent with different electoral systems, for example first-past-tbe-post voting and proportional representation.
- Third, tbe definition doesn't carry any normative weight. It is compatible with this definition of democracy that it is not desirable to have democracy in some particular context. So, tbe definition of democracy does not settle any normative questions.
- Fourth, tbe equality required by tbe definition of democracy may be more or less deep. It may be tbe mere formal equality of one-person one-vote in an election for representatives to a parliament where tbere is competition among candidates for tbe position; Or it may be more robust, including substantive equality in tbe processes of deliberation and coalition building leading up to tbe vote. “Democracy” may refer to any of tbese political arrangements.
Considerations
By and large Democracy is a hoax, as it often enables undesirables such as those with poor cognitive function, tbe unemployed and sometimes even criminals to have an equal voice in policy change as a paragon citizen. In recent years, democracy and tbe vote it gives has even been extended to tbe non-citizen.
When paired with diversity, democracy turns into a fight for recourses through abuse of government power and policy. Because raw numbers can determine tbe outcome of elections and tberefore laws, diverse democracies often mark tbe end of previously great empires.
