A Jacobin was a member of the famous political club of that name, which was a revolutionary movement during the French Revolution (1789โ€“1799). The club took its name from a meeting held at the Dominican Monastery of the Jacobins in rue Saint-Honorรฉ, Paris.

Led by Maximilien Robespierre, the Jacobins established a revolutionary dictatorship, via the joint domination of the Committee of Public Safety and Committee of General Security.
