Third party is a term often used in the context of an electoral system tending to create a two-party system, with the term referring to other parties than the two dominant parties and usually having limited influence.

Such parties may have effects such as influencing which one of the two dominant parties wins by gaining voters who otherwise would have voted on the two dominant parties.

In some categorizations, very small parties are not considered to be third parties.
