Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of America was formed on August 23, 1949, in Montgomery, Alabama in order to counter the growth of two rivals: the Association of Georgia Klans and the Federated Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.[1] The new Klan was formed by fifty representatives of splintered Klans representing the states of Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri. Lycurgus Spinks became the group's "Imperial Emperor". Spinks claimed his group represented every Klansman in America.[2]

On September 2, 1949 Spinks was interviewed on the national radio program Meet the Press.
