Platonian Rome
Fascist Ideas that carried over from Plato into Rome
Platonian Rome
Ancient Rome was fascist, and also the most successful society that mankind has ever produced.
- Those in charge should also be philosophers. Political power and philosophy should coincide.
- Representative government as opposed to "Democracy".
- Meritocratic ideals
- Leaders who live to lead.
Leaders should have reason, wisdom, and experience.
- Natural law and Natural right.
- Use of a constitution.
- Importance of an academic university.
- Political checks and balances, leader vs. a senate.
- Self sufficient society.
- Ideas of citizenship.
- Individual as a healthy part of society. Society as extended family.
- Justice comes from virtue.
- Wisdom comes from truth.
- Women play critical roles in Society
- Unity, another theme pervasive throughout Plato’s philosophy, which states:
"Unity is essential to the health of the state. Citizens should be so closely bound by institutions that they all want the same things."
This is a fascist core value. He added:
“When one of us hurts his finger, the whole extent of those bodily connections which are gathered up in the soul and unified by its ruling element is made aware and it all shares as a whole in the pain of the suffering part”
This analogy of the unified experience of the human body speaks to Plato’s urging that when one part of society hurts, the whole of society should feel it. Acting as one body makes for a strong and healthy state.
