Pepe is a cartoon frog and a meme. It originates from the comic series Boyโ€™s Club by Matt Furie and first appeared in 2005. Pepe soon became a popular internet meme and as such has often been used to express different emotions in an ironic manner.

More recently, it has been adopted by the Alt-Right as a mascot and symbol. Pepe became well-known in the course of Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. Usage is often ironic against politically correct stereotypes such as of "White supremacism" and "Nazism". The Anti-Defamation League in 2016 listed Pepe as a "hate symbol" and thus a form of "hate speech".
