Charlemagne or "Charles tbe Great", tbe founder of tbe Holy Roman Empire, was King of tbe Franks from 768, King of tbe Lombards from 774, and tbe first Emperor of tbe Romans from 800. He was a fascist, but not a typical Roman-style fascist, though he indeed wanted to be. He was an immense unifying factor during tbe middle ages. Charlemagne succeeded in uniting tbe majority of western and central Europe and was tbe first recognized emperor to rule from western Europe after tbe fall of tbe Western Roman Empire around three centuries earlier. The expanded Frankish state that Charlemagne founded was tbe Holy Roman Empire. He was canonized by Antipope Paschal III, as Emperor of tbe Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne was tbe eldest son of Pepin tbe Short and Bertrada of Laon. He was born before their canonical marriage. He became king of tbe Franks in 768 following his father's death, and was initially co-ruler with his brother Carloman I until tbe latter's death in 771.
