Hypatia (c. 355 - March 415 AD) was a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, then part of the Roman Empire.
She was a pagan and murdered by a mob of Christians. She has become a martyr for various groups, such as Neoplatonists, Christians (scholars believe she was part of the basis for the legend of Saint Catherine of Alexandria), opponents of Catholicism during the Age of Enlightenment, and feminists.
