Polygenism refers to theories claiming that human races are of very different origins. It was historically associated with the view that the major races were actually different species. Polygenism is also associated with religious beliefs that a god or several gods created the different races. However, certain non-religious theories, such as different human races/species evolving from different ape species, are also referred to as polygenism.
