Rudolf Werner
Rudolf Werner (b. 27 July 1922; d. 2. July 2022) was a German NCO (SS-Unterscharführer) of the Waffen-SS in World War II. He died peacefully only 25 days before his 100th birthday as one of the very last living members of the Leibstandarte.
Life
WWII
Like many of his generation, Rudolf Werner volunteered for the Waffen-SS and was drafted into the LSSAH in Berlin-Lichterfelde. After basic training and subsequent use in the guard battalion (SS-Wach-Bataillon 2), he was deployed on the Eastern Front. Here he served as a field cook (Feldkoch of the Divisionsstabskompanie). After being wounded and transferred to the replacement battalion (Ersatz-Bataillon), he and thousands of other comrades ended up in the Halbe pocket (Kessel von Halbe) and, with a lot of luck, was able to fight his way through to the 12. Armee „Wenck“ (de), with which he became a prisoner of war on 8 May 1945.
Post-war
In the post-war time, he recorded his memories for posterity in the book "Vom Wachbataillon bis in den Kessel von Halbe".
