The White Man's Burden is a 1899 poem by Rudyard Kipling. It is usually described as pro-colonialism, with Whites seen as having the burden of an attempted "civilizing mission" regarding non-Whites, despite various stated problems and burdens.
The poem has also been cited by opponents of colonialism.
It has been seen as an example of pathological altruism by Whites.
