Alwin Brandt (1925–2023) was one of the last known living German officers of the Waffen-SS.
Life
WWII
Brandt was a member of the Hitler Youth, finished his school exams and became a member of the Waffen-SS, where he was trained as an officer candidate and promoted to SS-Untersturmführer. Durin the Battle of Normandy he served as the leader (Zugführer) of a grenade launcher platoon in the 4. Kompanie/SS-Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 12/12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend. He was severly wounded during the Battle of Vienna 1945 and and became a US prisoner of war.
Post-war
Brandt, married and father of two children, became a tax inspector (Finanzbeamter) for the state and later a self-employed tax consultant. For many years he was a member of the Jacoby-Bürgergilde. After the church, it is the oldest institution in Neumünster (since 1578) that still exists today.
