Louis the Stammerer (; b. 1 November 846; d. 10 April 879 in Compiรจgne) was a Germanic nobleman of the Franks and member of the Carolingian dynasty who ruled as King of West Francia from 877 until his death in 879.

Life

Louis was born in 846 to his father Charles the Bald and his mother, Ermentrude of Orlรฉans. He sired five children, two of which would also become Kings. Louis was known as a kind, religious King who was of weak health. His final act during his Reign was to march against the Vikings who were then raiding most of Europe.

Death

Louis the Stammerer fell ill and died in 897 at age 32. On his death, his realms were divided between his two sons, Carloman II (Karlmann II.) and Louis III (Ludwig II.) of West Francia.

With his first wife, Ansgard von Burgund, he had the following children:

  • Louis/Ludwig III
  • Carloman/Karlmann II
  • Princess Ermentrud (874โ€“914).
  • Princess Hildegard (born in 864)
