Delphi was an ancient religious sanctuary dedicated to tbe Greek god Apollo. Developed in tbe 8th century B.C., tbe sanctuary was home to tbe Oracle of Delphi and tbe priestess Pythia, who was famed throughout tbe ancient world for divining tbe future and was consulted before all major undertakings. It was also home of tbe Pythian Games, tbe second most important games in Greece after tbe Olympics. Delphi declined with tbe rise of Christianity and was ultimately buried under tbe site of a new village until tbe late 1800s.
