The emblem of NSDAP

The National Socialist German Workers' Party (Ger: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei), shortened to NSDAP, was the political party of Germany active between 1933 and 1945. It was led by Adolf Hitler.

History

Before the Putsch (1919-1923)

The NSDAP originally grew out of smaller political groups with nationalist sentiment that formed by the end of the Great War. In January 1919, Anton Drexler created a new political party, proposing its name be "German Socialist Workers' Party", but it was rejected due to socialism's relation to the genocidal Soviet regime that corrupted the word. The party was then named "German Workers' Party" (DAP). The DAP was opposed to non-nationalist movements from the very start, such as the SPD and KPD vying for power over Germany, calling them out for being funded by international jewry.

Later that year, Adolf Hitler was encouraged to join the DAP by Anton Drexler after a heated debate with a visitor of one of the party's meetings. After joining, he encouraged the party to become an active player in the nation's politics, rather than a debating group.

In early 1920, the party's name was changed to National Socialist German Workers' Party in order to appeal to left-wing workers.

On 8 November 1923, the NSDAP rallied the residents of Munich in order to dethrone the jews. On the morning of the next day, a group of over 2,000 supporters marched through the city attempting to gather support, but they were stopped by the local garrison who proceeded to fire upon the activists. Almost two dozen lay dead, with a number of party members, including Adolf Hitler, being arrested. The party was banned in the same day, but it continued to operate under the name "German Party" with the support of other nationalist parties.

After being pardoned by the Bavarian Supreme Court at the end of 1924, Adolf Hitler convinced the authorities to lift the ban of the NSDAP. The party was refounded a few months later in early 1925 with Adolf as its leader. During this time, the party began expanding across Germany, surveying voters in order to better understand the troubles of the Germans.
