The M.S. Wilhelm Gustloft sustained the largest maritime loss of human life at sea of all time, approximately 9400, mostly women and children. The large luxury ocean liner that was peacefully evacuating civilians was targeted and sunk on January 30, 1945 by Soviet submarine S-13 in the Baltic Sea. The ship was on a mission to evacuate civilian refugees' from East Prussia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Estonia, as well as German military personnel from Gotenhafen Gdynia. The MS Gustloft was creation of the DAF, Strength Though Joy KdF program.
